Setbacks come in a variety of forms. For example, you might hit a training plateau where you feel stuck with no sign of improvement. Perhaps events beyond your control prevent you from getting to the gym for an extended period of time. Or, you might wind up with an injury.

No matter what the setback might be, it can be tough to deal with. So what can you do when you’re feeling frustrated or disappointed?

Here are a few suggestions on how to bounce back from a fitness setback:

1. Reframe “Why Me?” to “Why Not Me?”

Unfortunately, no one is immune to setbacks. Obstacles can pop up in fitness as well as almost any area of your life. There isn’t much we can do to prevent a setback from occurring. But we can choose how to respond.

It’s not uncommon to ask, “Why did this have to happen to me?” But this line of thinking will most likely land you in a pretty negative place. Try to reframe this question to, “Why not me?” If you’re able to treat a setback as an opportunity to become more resilient, you’ll bounce back more quickly with a productive and positive mindset.

2. Focus on What You Can Control.

Many times, a setback is the result of something that is beyond your control. Regardless of what caused your setback, take a closer look at the situation. Figure out what’s in your control at this point and what isn’t.

Again, one of the most significant things you can control is your reaction. You may not be able to heal an injury overnight. But you can do all you can (i.e., physical therapy, rest, etc.) to get back to the gym as quickly as possible.

3. Take Action.

When you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, and disappointed, it helps to take action. Any action. Doing something, even if it’s not exactly what you’d want to be doing, can contribute to a more positive mindset. Let go of what’s happened and focus on moving forward. Turn your attention to what you can do now to take action, and then go and do it.
