Have you set any new year’s resolutions for 2021? If so, what can you do to increase your chances for success?
Here are a few ways to make your resolutions stick in the coming year:
1. Change up your approach.
If you’ve set resolutions in the past that didn’t lead to the results that you had intended, you’re not alone. But just because your resolution didn’t work out in the past doesn’t mean this year has to follow the same pattern. Change up your approach. For example, if you’ve set a past resolution without a plan, this year try making a plan for how you’ll follow through. Try something new, and you’ll probably get different results.
2. Be specific about your intention.
For your resolutions to stick, you need to be specific about your intention. A vague thought like “get more fit” will probably not lead to any lasting change. But if you take that thought and define what “more fit” will look like, then you’re increasing your chances for success. For example, you might resolve to “go to the gym three times a week.”
3. Take your time.
When you’re working on making a change to your fitness and health, it’s hard to be patient. But if you set unrealistic expectations, then you’re also setting yourself up for disappointment. Take your time with the process and give your body and mind time to adapt and change.
4. Prioritize and focus.
As you create resolutions and goals for the new year, prioritize. Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, choose one or two goals to focus on. Biting off more than you can chew might end up backfiring if it only makes you feel overwhelmed and stretched too thin. Decide what’s most important to you at this point in your life, and throw all of your energy into making it happen.
5. Don’t keep it a secret.
Sometimes we don’t want others to know the goals that we’re working toward. Because, what if they don’t work out? What if we make a mistake? Well, those mistakes might happen. But you’re more likely to hold yourself accountable to your goals and resolutions if you share them with others. You don’t have to make a big announcement; just letting in a few close friends or family members can make a big difference.
