It happens to all of us. We wake up early to work out and end up turning off the alarm. Or plan on a lunchtime or evening workout and end up skipping it.
What can you do when your motivation to get to the gym disappears? Here are some tips for working out when you don’t feel like it:
1. Remember your why.
When you really don’t feel like going to the gym, take a quick moment to remember the why behind your workouts. For example, why have you been making all the other workouts a priority in your life? Sometimes just remembering the purpose or importance of sticking to your routine is enough to snap you back into workout mode.
2. Establish a routine.
Establishing a consistent workout routine is another way to help you on the days when you just don’t feel like working out. The routine creates a habit, so when you start questioning if you really want to go or not, the discipline you’ve been developing will kick in, and you’ll go because it’s what you’ve been doing at this same day at this same time for the past several weeks.
3. Listen to your excuses.
When you don’t feel like working out, listen to the excuses bouncing around in your head. Why don’t you feel like it today? Did you only get two hours of sleep the night before? Or does the couch and Netflix just sound much more appealing? If there isn’t much validity behind your reason to skip a workout, take a deep breath, and point your car toward the gym. You’ll feel much better that you did!
4. Recruit a workout buddy.
When motivation wanes, it’s helpful to have a workout buddy who can support you and provide some accountability. Text your workout buddy that you’re not sure if you’re going to the gym, and they’ll be there to either encourage you or give you some tough love. Showing up means you won’t let your buddy down, and you’ll have much more fun during the workout with a friend or two there, too.
